Religious education must take into account the whole personality and the whole life of the individual. It must stimulate and strengthen faith in God; fill the heart of the student with teachings which come from a powerful faith, and lead to a life in Christ toward which young and old alike should be ever-growing. This life consists of understanding the meaning of Jesus Christ, His teaching for the life of today, and, guided by the teachings of the Orthodox Church, translating it into daily conduct and character.

Our Sunday School serves children from age four to seniors in High School. Sunday School begins immediately following Holy Communion and lasts for a fifty-minute period once class begins. We are generally finished by noon. Classes are taught in the basement of the Hellenic Community Center.

Complete our registration form to register your children and bring it to church with your check or cash, or to the Sunday School office during the year.

The Cathedral Sunday School is implementing two curriculums this year. Grades K-5 are using the curriculum provided by the Greek Orthodox Church of America’s Department of Religious Education. For grades 6-10 we are excited to use a new curriculum created by Orthodox parishes on the east coast. This is a cycling curriculum and is taught in four, year long classes. The one year classes include Old Testament, The Life of Christ, Church History, and, Sacraments, Feasts and Epistles. Over a period of four years regularly attending students will gain a strong foundation in our Orthodox Christian faith. Finally, Grades 11 and 12 cover contemporary moral topics to prepare them for living as an Orthodox Christian in America.

MEET OUR SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS

  • My name is Patrice Dovas-Hudson and I have been a Sunday School teacher here at theAssumption Cathedral for 12 years. Like many of your parents, my parents brought me toSunday School throughout my youth. I studied physical education and foreign languages incollege, and I coached and taught at Rangeview High School for 29 years. I am married andwe have one son who participated in Sunday School, basketball and served as an acolytehere at the Cathedral. When our son was a sixth-grader, I began teaching Sunday Schooland have continued ever since. I am proud to say that we now have a daughter-in-law, asour son recently married here at the Assumption Cathedral.

  • Poti Doukas has served as a Sunday School teacher at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Cathedral for over ten years. Over this time, he has volunteered with middle and high school students. Poti is an aerospace engineer by profession and is an active steward of the cathedral parish. He is married to Stephanie Papageorge Doukas and they both relish time with their six grandchildren.

  • Jasmine is our 6th and 7th grade Sunday School Teacher. She loves spending time with the kids and making sure their Sunday School experience is fun and exciting. She believes the truths that come from the Bible should be a part of every child's foundation. She prepares lessons and activities on all of the classic Bible stories including Joseph and his brothers, Samson, Queen Esther, David and Goliath, Daniel in the Lion's Den, Noah's Ark and much more!

  • Nicole Michas is a paralegal for a Probate and Estate Planning law firm as well as a shift supervisor at Starbucks. She is vice-president of the Castle Rock Writers Group. She has been teaching Sunday School and has been involved with planning the parish level of the St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival for the Cathedral since about 2006.

  • I recently completed a graduate level certificate in Youth and Young Adult Ministry at Holy Cross Seminary. I am so grateful to serve as a Sunday School teacher and put my studies to practice at the Cathedral. I am so excited to encourage friendships and lifelong relationships among children of the church, while teaching concrete ways to live out an Orthodox life. I am excited to work with the children of our parish and hope to foster love and faith among the young.

  • I serve as our 4th grade Sunday School teacher. Being my first year teaching SS, it has been gratifying to see how connected our students are to their faith at such a young age. My mission is to nurture that connection and create lasting memories for our students as they explore their faith as a team. Each class session is a chance to strengthen their faith through bible stories, personal reflections, and interactive games. The students’ favorite activities have been “Bible De-Code” where they race to find and interpret passages in the Bible while learning to navigate the Old and New Testaments, and “Divine Liturgy Jeopardy” where they demonstrate knowledge of our church service.

  • I am honored to be part of the Assumption Cathedral family since 1972. As a past Elementary school teacher, my love is working with young children. I have been teaching Sunday school all my adult life. For the last fifteen years, I have been teaching kindergarten. The pupils' workbook centers around the theme; What We See And Do In Church. Through these lessons the hope is to help our children come closer to Jesus Christ and His Holy Orthodox Church. Lessons cover such topics as, Prayer, The Signs of the Cross, Holy Icons, Communion, Saints of our Church, The Iconostasion, St. Basil (Vasilopeta) Christ’s birth, His 40 day Blessing, His Baptism, His teachings, His crucifixion and His Resurrection. The lessons also introduce the meaning of some of our Holy Days: Christmas, Pascha, Palm Sunday, the Elevation of the Holy Cross, The Annunciation, and Pentecost. It is my privilege to share with the church in the responsibility of our children’s spiritual growth and development.

  • I have been a part of the Assumption Metropolis Cathedral of Denver since I was a child. I grew up in the church and attend services regularly with my husband, Tim. I work during the week as a Pre-Need Advisor at Horan and McConaty Funeral Homes. In my spare time I enjoy photography and I even photograph at some events here at the church. I love teaching Sunday School because it offers me an opportunity to discover my faith through the children as they grow in their Orthodox Faith.
